Nintendo’s latest earnings report has revealed that the Nintendo Switch 2 has already sold over 6 million units worldwide in its first seven weeks, far surpassing the original Switch’s launch performance.

In the FY2026 Q1 financial materials, Nintendo confirmed that since the Switch 2’s launch on June 5, cumulative global hardware sales have exceeded 6 million units in just under two months. For comparison, the original Nintendo Switch sold 2.74 million units in a similar period according to its FY2017 Q4 financials, making the Switch 2 one of Nintendo’s most successful launches to date.

Despite continued supply shortages in several regions, the company also reported robust software sales. Total game sales on Switch 2 reached 8.67 million units, with Mario Kart World leading the pack at 5.63 million units sold, boosted by bundled versions of the game.

Interestingly, the original Nintendo Switch still managed to sell 980,000 units during the same timeframe, although this marks a 53.5% year-over-year decline. However, software sales for the original Switch remain strong at 24.4 million units for the quarter, a 20.4% year-over-year decline, likely helped by backwards compatibility and ongoing multi-platform releases.

Nintendo’s overall performance beat market expectations, with operating profit rising 4.4% to 56.9 billion yen.

Food for Thought:

The strong hardware and software performance of the Switch 2, combined with a healthier-than-expected legacy platform ecosystem, positions Nintendo well heading into the crucial holiday and fiscal year-end season. Supply constraints remain an issue, but early signs suggest a demand curve similar to, or even greater than, that of the original Switch.

If this momentum continues, 2026 could mark one of Nintendo’s most profitable years ever.
